Need A New Water Heater? How To Get It Done

Water heaters are a necessary part of any home. They are responsible for giving you the warm water you need so you can shower, do dishes, and do laundry in your home. If you don't have warm water that is easily accessible, it can be difficult to do these things. If you don't have a working hot water heater, you may need to have a new one installed, you may be able to install it yourself. Read on for tips to help you get this job done.

Turn Off The Water Supply And Gas Line

Shut off the gas line and the water supply going to the old unit. You need to be sure to turn off the electricity to your water heater as well if you have an electric water heater. Never work on the water heater unless you have everything shut off to the appliance. This is going to be removed, so you need to be sure it's safe for removal.

Empty The Water

If you still have water in the old water heater, you're going to need to empty the water out of it. To get this done, you're going to need to attach a hose to the drain opening, open the drain to allow the water to come out, then drain all of the water out of the unit. Once it's emptied, you can begin to remove it from your home.

Remove The Old Unit

To remove the old unit from your home, you need to detach the gas line and the water line. You may have to cut through the copper water line if need be. Detach the gas line from your unit, then you can begin removing it from your home. When removing the unit, it may be heavy and difficult to remove, as there may still be some water inside.

Set In The New Unit

Set the new unit in its place and attach the gas line. Then install the water line by soldering the copper lines together. Check for leaks in your gas line and in your water line. To check for gas leaks, you can use bubble soap. If you have leaks, you need to tighten the gas line or re-solder the water line.

If you are in need of a new water heater, you may be able to install it yourself. If you don't think you can install a water heater yourself, hire a professional plumber to do this for you.
