Sump Pump Selection: Things To Know

End Of The Season Air Conditioning Maintenance You Should Be Doing

At the end of the warm weather season, you shouldn't just turn off your air conditioner and call it done, your air conditioner should be given some maintenance to ensure it will run properly when you turn it back on the following spring. If you aren't performing proper maintenance on your unit, you're setting your system up for a shorter lifespan and could end up needing a new air conditioner long before you should have. Read on for some end-of-the-season maintenance you should be doing.

Spraying Down Your Condensing Unit

You should be spraying down your condensing unit at the end of the season to get rid of debris from the fin coils on the unit. These fins can accumulate with debris all season long, and if you allow it to stay there, it could end up bending the fins with time. Spray the unit down at the end of the season with your garden hose to clean these fins. Spray them with a gentle spray, just to remove the built-up dirt and debris. To get a better clean, be sure to remove the housing from the unit as well.

Inspect The Pipe Insulation

The piece of insulation covering the refrigeration line should be inspected to be sure it is in good condition. If you see holes in it, tears, or any damage at all, this piece of insulation should be replaced. This insulation helps prevent the line from getting too hot or too cold. Replacing this piece of insulation is simple to do and only takes a few minutes of your time. Simply remove the old insulation, then attach the new piece and tape it together so it seals around the pipe securely. You can find new insulation for this line at your local hardware store.

Cover Your Unit

At the end of the season when your air conditioner is no longer being used, you should cover the unit with an exterior cover to protect it from the elements, including falling debris from trees and other foliage, lawn clippings, airborne debris, and to protect it from snow and ice as well. You can find air conditioner covers at your local hardware store.

If you aren't performing proper maintenance on your air conditioner, you could be shortening the lifespan of your unit and setting yourself up for repair costs that could be hefty.
